The Astra Choir
is for the adventurous in spirit
The Choir performs up to five programs every year, with a broad choral music repertoire from mediaeval chant to the latest contemporary music, including works from the classical musical tradition. The full choir and singers from the choir often perform in chamber music concerts and multi-disciplinary projects involving improvision, new technologies and theatrical elements.
We welcome singers from many different backgrounds to the choir.
All singers need to be able to read music and have good sight-reading skills. An informal audition with the musical director John McCaughey will be scheduled with a prospective choir member to determine sight reading abilities and if the voice is a good fit for the choir.
The Astra Choir rehearses Wednesday evenings, 7.30–10pm at the Church of All Nations (180 Palmerston Street, Carlton). Extra rehearsals including Saturday afternoons are occasionally scheduled.
Choir members pay an annual membership fee of $50/$25 concession and become members of Astra Chamber Music Society Inc (at no extra cost), which entitles them to vote at the AGM.
All choir members need to commit in advance to attend all rehearsals, dress rehearsals and concerts in which they will perform.
Choir members should respect and meet the musical director John McCaughey’s professional expectations in order to realise Astra’s creative vision.
